COMMON
MISTAKES IN AMHARIC DESK TOP PUBLISHING.
- CHANGING OF FONT BEHAVIOR: Never expect a
document which is written in Amharic will behave the same if it opens in
another computer with the same application.
- PDF FILE: Never trust a PDF file will generate a
perfect file from Microsoft Word. Most of the time the Adobe PDF omits changes
and alters the Word document and never releases with out showing your document
for a native proofreader.
- UNICODE FONT: If you use an Amharic UNICODE
fonts, do not expect your document will behave well on none Unicode
applications. Instead you will see a series of "?"s.
- THINK BEFORE YOU START: Choosing a right font for
your project ahead of time will save you time and money. Some fonts are
limited to work only on Microsoft Words.
- SIZE MATTERS: If you have limited real-estate in
your design, make sure expand them ahead of time. A three letter English word
could be a seven letter Amharic word. Most Amharic fonts are fatter and longer
than others. If you make them to small to fit in your design it will be hard
to read.
- GET NATIVE PROOFREAD: Never send for printing a
finished DTP with out showing a native Amharic proofreader, you will be
surprised how many mistakes he/she will find.
- OUTLINE: If you are lucky outline your document
before generating PDF or EPS file. But this is not good enough, show your
outlined document for a native proofreader.
- NO TWO AMHARIC FONTS WILL PRODUCE THE SAME: In
English if you press "t" you will get "t" and if you change the
font style from Times New Roman to Verdana
or Arial "t" will stays the
same, except the style will be different. But for most Amharic fonts, except
few exceptions, if you change the font from some Amharic font to another the
result will be different.
